Nomy Lamm and the Need
Transmit. Transform. Transcend. Transgress. Transfix. Welcome to the electrifying world of The Transfused, a new full length rock opera. The showwill debute this July at the historic Capitol Theater in Olympia, Washington; and the sound track CD will debute this summer on CD players everywhere.
In the tradition of Jesus Christ Superstar and The Who’s Tommy, The Transfused presents itself as the first rock opera of the punk genre. This project brings together the diverse talents of musicians, performers, and countless others, from Olympia and beyond. Grassroots in the truest sense, The Transfused is a triumph of the DIY spirit, showing what people can accomplish with the right inspiration, motivation, and community resources.
The Transfused is the name of a group of punk-ass gender-freaky animal-people living in a terrifying and none-too-unlikely future, the breathtakingly polluted aftermath of rampant industrialism. Set one hundred years after the fall of the American Empire, the story follows Sid, Tova, Avi, Cooper and the rest of the Transfused through three momentous days as their world falls apart and they painstakingly begin to piece it back together again.
Other characters include the Corporation, puppet masters of the new era; the militaristic Sliders and their dominatrix Commander; Grin, a fast-talking pseudo-revolutionary would-be-dictator, and his sidekick Gormlis; and the Rats, the wise fools, who observe the unfolding drama from a distance with riddles and warnings.
The original score of the Transfused features the collaborative force of vocalist/lyricist Nomy Lamm, along with Radio Sloan and RachelCarns (a.k.a. the Need). For the three, The Transfused may be their most inventive (and certainly most ambitious) project yet. Lamm’s history in musical theater and word-craft meets Sloan’s guitar mastery and Carns’ inspired rhythms and bold organ flourishes to produce a sound that rewrites the rules. Ranging from soul to punk to heavy metal to baroque, the music ultimately reflects the junkyard landscape of The Transfused, using oddball time signatures and segues to weld the relics of the past into a soundtrack for the future.
For the sound track (both live and recorded), the band of Sloan and Carns will be joined by pioneer rocker Donna Dresch (president of Chainsaw Records) of Team Dresch, and the Screaming Trees.
The Transfused will appeal to punks, activists, queers, music and theater lovers of all kinds, using the rock opera form to entertain and enthrall while simultaneously experimenting with the concepts of gender, (dis)ability, disease, addiction, community, social change, compassion, and humanity.
