Live schmive! This is a sound documentary of the legendary Yoyo A Go Go, the Olympia music festival and sub-cultural hotspot - a five day, all-you-can-hear extravaganza, combining music, performance and sublime opportunities to start trouble at the local carnival. If you weren’t among the thousand lucky kids who jammed the Capitol Theater to see the Yoyo 1997, now you have the chance to experience non-stop kicks from 22 bands which crowd this amazing CD/double LP.
From the massively heavy rumble of KARP’s “Bacon Industry” to the ‘No parking on the dance floor’-expressions of Dub Narcotic Sound System, Olympia’s extraordinary bands are well represented, along with favorites from the roster of Yoyo Recordings such as the winsome Mirah, the acerbic Mountain Goats and Yoyo label founder Pat Maley’s own Little Red Car Wreck.
Just as 1994' s Yoyo showcased Beck before he went stratospheric, 97’s fest can claim to have had their crystal ball focused on Elliott Smith and Modest Mouse, both which are poised to pluck the rose of fame within moments. Sleater-Kinney (joined by members of Team Dresch and The Need) weighs in with a powerhouse “Dance Song 97” and Built to Spill are crowned kings of NW rock with “Stop the Show”.
As their “around the world and around the corner” motto proclaims, Yoyo A Go Go has an international appeal as well as local. Japanese bands Kirihito, and Seagull Screaming Kiss Her Kiss Her made the long journey to visit Olympia, and Canadians Mecca Normal bravely crossed the border for the event. Olympian a cappella artists Jason Traeger and Khaela Maracich traveled over three city blocks to arrive for their set! Amazing!
Olympia in the summertime is a joyful fancy. And now it’s only as far away as your stereo.
