Deerhoof - Matchbook Seeks Maniac picture disc 7" $5
Deerhoof are on a roll! In the past year they've toured with The Flaming Lips and Radiohead as well as headlined multiple tours of their own across the globe. They've recorded and released their most successful album to date: Friend Opportunity, performed at a children's ballet version of Milk Man in Maine, and collaborated with actor Justin Theroux (Mulholland Drive, Charlie's Angels: Full Throttle, etc) on his directorial debut Dedication (starring Mandy Moore + Billy Crudup). Deerhoof composed original pieces for the film as well as gave the movie use of several songs - many off of 2002's Reveille. The final credits will feature "Matchbook Seeks Maniac", a song originally written with the hopes of being included in the movie and then included onto Friend Opportunity. This picture disc 7" features the Dedication mix of the song. Think Phil Spector and Deerhoof melding in a perfect reverb-y daydream of a song about the corrupting influence of power. Add a b-side called Makko Shobu about sperm whales in love (previously only available on iTunes) and original art for the picture disc by Scottish artist David Shrigley and you have the single of the year.
Numbers - Now You Are This CD $12
Butterfly caught in a spiderweb. Shattered stained glass windows. Three legged dogs. A black eye on your best friend. There isn't an easy comparison for the dire, wounded poise of this record, a secret pact between beauty and fear. The songs are pensive and worry-stained, all minimal, bluntly entrancing riffs, insistent drumming, and tense, reverberant synthesizers. The futuristic propulsion of Kraftwerk filtered through the raw-knuckled roughness of Suicide?
Stereo Total - Paris-Berlin CD $12
This is Punk, this is Rock'n'Roll, this is modern Music! After Oh Ah, Monokini, Juke-Box-Alarm, My Melody, Musique Automatique, and Do The Bambi, now coming up is Stereo Total's new record: Paris-Berlin. Paris-Berlin is both - a Rock'n'Roll- and a Chanson-Album. At the same time it's more dynamic as well as more romantic than Stereo Total's previous productions. The songs are for the most part very melodic, the lyrics deal with topics like LOVE, REBELLION and NOSTALGIA.
They Shoot Horses Don't They - Pick Up Sticks CD $12
They Shoot Horses, Don't They? clearly state their intentions on ÒOne Last Final PushÓ Ð the opening salvo of sophomore album Pick Up Sticks. Amidst an engaging racket, vocalist/guitarist Nut Brown cries, ÒWe go on marching forward; Through all the silent faces; Sing! This noise! This drum! Well, here we come!Ó While often likened to a marching band, the six-member group actually shares a greater affinity with a nomadic, conquering horde.
Elliott Smith - New Moon 2CD /2LP $14
Arguably the most gifted song-writer of his generation, Elliott Smith
produced a large body of work that includes five solo albums, as well
as From a Basement on the Hill (2004), a collection of songs
completed before his death in 2003. On May 8, 2007, Kill Rock Stars
will release a double CD of music by Elliott Smith entitled New Moon.
The album contains 24 songs recorded between 1994-1997, a prolific
time in Smith's career, when he recorded his self-titled album and
Either/Or (both also released by Kill Rock Stars).
The Mary Timony Band - The Shapes We Make CD $12
The Shapes We Make, the Mary Timony Band's debut on Olympia's Kill
Rock Stars, represents the latest stage in the evolution of one of
the most important voices in underground music. Flowing from the
mystic prog laced veins that have informed her art for the past
decade, "The Shapes We Make" builds upon the stark rebellious
austerity of 2005's Ex Hex and imbues it with warmth and formidable
urgency.
Xiu Xiu - Remixed & Covered 2CD $14
Xiu Xiu, now a three-piece featuring Jamie Stewart, Caralee McElroy,
and Ches Smith, crafts a sickeningly intimate art that is equally
sensual and icy. With damaged, wraithlike dance-beats and grim
electro minimalism, it cuts you like nails across bare thighs but,
just the same, it will brush your hair back from your face, look deep
into your pretty eyes, and say, "I feel the same way as you
sometimes. We're not too different, are we?" Xiu Xiu and friends do
this and more on a new double-CD set of covers and remixes. Trivia:
This is the last record we have scheduled to come out on 5RC.
Marnie Stern - In Advance of the Broken Arm CD $12
Ok. Let's get this out of the way. Marnie Stern can shred. She's a better guitar player than you, or me, or probably 99% of the people who have ever looked at a guitar. There. That's done. Marnie came out of nowhere, or the Upper East Side of Manhattan to be exact. She didn't listen to "good" music (her words) until she was 23. The first thing she heard that made her head spin was Sleater-Kinney, followed a few years later by Hella, Boredoms, Melt Banana, etc. A Don Caballero video introduced her to the finger-tapping technique she now uses expertly. For the last several years she has played guitar for "at least" three hours a day because she feels guilty when she doesn't play.
Deerhoof - Friend Opportunity CD/LP $13
Just when you think you're too jaded to swoon over anything, or clasp your hands to your chest and just smile and say "Yes!" out loud when it gets to your favorite part of a song, well, throw on Friend Opportunity and give it a few spins so it sinks in.
Deerhoof - Poster Pack Posters $5
Limited Edition promo posters from Reveille, Milkman, Apple-O. and Friend Opportunity. This item available with another item only. Available while supplies last. (Ignore the Runner's Four poster in the photograph, it is out of print.)
The Decemberists - A Practical Handbook DVD $15
Decemberists are firmly established as a completely original happening in the world of contemporary indie rock: sold out tours across the nation, widespread popular and critical acclaim, and an aesthetic all their own. This DVD captures the Decemberists in the midst of their rise to prominence with a live recording of the band in concert at the Roseland Theatre in Portland, Oregon on November 4, 2005.
Macromantics - Moments in Movement CD $12
"Australian rapper and word weaving wizard macromantics took the heartbeat she was born with, and turned it into music. From an early age, she was drawn to the world of sine waves. At the age of 15, she was asked to tour with Ben Lee's teenage pop-punk pack Noise Addict, as a guitarist and it was during this journey that she discovered the essence of Hip Hop.
BARR - Summary CD $12
After growing up in Reagan-era Berkeley, Brendan Fowler's parents moved him across the country to the sticks outside Baltimore when he was nine, leaving him culture shocked and having to scour for memos from the outside world. Finding inspiration in skateboarding, fanzines, and his cool older goth friends who were into The Cure, he played music in high school with friends (who would eventually become Animal Collective) and in college in New York City and studied free jazz percussion.
